An Alcohol Overdose Serves as a Wakeup Call for a High School Student

Written by man on August 5th, 2009 in Uncategorized.

Jeffrey was a high school ninth grader who typically seemed to be living on the edge.  Jeffrey had an adventurous personality and frequently wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The key holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were consequently able from a legal standpoint to drive a truck or car and to drink alcohol.

Jeffrey, nevertheless, had a rough time accepting the truth that as a fifteen-year-old youth he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, conversely, Jeffrey normally drank with his guy friends after school, predominantly on the weekends.

One weekend, Jeffrey made up his mind to drive around with some of his older buddies.  One of his pals was old enough to buy alcohol.  After buying some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Jeffrey and his buddies went to a public recreational area and drank for just about two or three hours.

A Young Man Becomes Unconscious

After drinking around ten glasses of wine, Jeffrey started to feel queasy and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the soccer field, one of his cronies called 911 for immediate help. It was fortunate that the call for medical help was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Jeffrey, they were told that Jeffrey had been showing evidence of alcohol poisoning symptoms.  More precisely, Jeffrey had experienced an alcohol overdose.

When Your Friends Drink Too Much

Jeffrey had heard that drinking in a hazardous manner can result in an alcohol overdose but he never thought that this could affect him. After all, some of his guy friends repeatedly stated that they could drink twenty four or more bottles of beer in a day without experiencing any serious difficulties.

Based on this, Jeffrey was actually amazed to learn that he had overdosed on alcohol because he “only” had roughly ten drinks.  When he articulated this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, conversely, the healthcare practitioner notified Jeffrey that drinking ten glasses of wine over a two or three hour time frame could in fact be substantially more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body.  The doctor further conveyed how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person’s breathing and that when this happens, a person can expire.

The First Sign of Excessive Drinking

This was the first indication to Jeffrey that he was drinking in a risky way and that there is a price tag for such activities.  The healthcare practitioner told Jeffrey that he was a lucky young man because he almost perished from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The doctor also conversed with Jeffrey’s parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehab for Jeffrey.  His parents were delighted that Jeffrey was all right and informed the healthcare professional that they would follow through on getting Jeffrey alcohol therapy.

While conversing with his parents, Jeffrey notified them that there must be a good reason why he did not expire and that he felt grateful that he was still alive.  He also informed his parents that the weirdest part about the entire drinking episode was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the past week in health class at school.

When Listening in Class Can Make a Difference

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Franklin, was teaching didn’t seem to make a lot of sense to Jeffrey.  Due to the fact that he almost passed away, then again, he felt that he should have listened more carefully in health class and applied what he had learned to his life.

Jeffrey notified his parents that he couldn’t wait to go back to Mr. Franklin’s classroom and make an apology to Mr. Franklin for not paying closer attention to something that was as significant as learning about alcohol abuse and how to stay away from an alcohol overdose.

His parents smiled at Jeffrey and said that they were proud of the way he was being responsible for his injurious drinking actions.  All he had to do now was to let this near fatal experience make an impact his life in a useful manner so that he would never again suffer from a case of alcohol poisoning.
